This is a coming of age novel following the lives of two girls who we meet when they are both at secondary school in Karachi, who both move to the UK in adulthood and continue their friendship.

We first meet Maryam and Zahra in 1988 as political unrest in their country threatens their understanding of their place in the world with a female being elected as president and there are now more opportunities for them.

After a party they are offered a lift home and the events of the journey has an effect on their lives forever.

The book moves to 2019 and the girls now in their 40s have remained in the UK after university living in London, they still see each other for a walk on a Sunday to talk.

Maryam is a successful app owner who is asked to work for the government despite this conflicting with the work that Zarah does in supporting refugee applications. The two women fall out over an application for leave to remain over one of the men involved in the incident in Karachi in the 80s after Zarah discovers that Maryam used her influence to get the application turned down and the applicant removed from the UK.

The book was an easy read and gave an insight into the troubles that went on in Pakistan in the late 80s explaining why so many people chose to leave and why some were forced to.
