We first meet Maryam and Zahra in 1988, they come from different backgrounds but are very close friends who share their clear dreams and ambitions with each other.
Maryam is very close to her grandfather and aspires, and is expected, to run her grandfather's leather goods company. Her loyalty to Zahra results in her dreams being shattered after the girls make a rash decision one night.
Maryam is sent off to boarding school in the UK and has to rebuild her life and aspirations there while Zahra stays in Karachi and continues her education.
Forty years later both women are living in London, both incredibly successful but still unable to shake off the effects of the event from their childhood.
Their rekindled friendship has a different feel to it and is now more complex.
Changes in politics, particularly for women, run through the story and although I would not put this at the top of the list of books I have read and enjoyed it was an interesting and well written tale.
