This book was a really enjoyable and refreshing read.
Both of the central characters where identifiable and it was easy to build a bond with them and become interested in their stories. The realities of life and mistakes that humans make was included in the story and made it more of a believable read.
The book also draws upon political matters in society such as the treatment of refugees in Britain and this was very thought provoking as issues around this topic are very relevant in society today. I learnt a lot from this that I was not originally aware of. The second half of the book was in fact set in modern times which, I think, makes it very relatable to a younger audience. Stories which follow characters through decades of change in their lives can be very engrossing if they are well written and this one certainly fits that brief. One to read.
