This was my first time reading Kamila Shamsie and I have to say that I was very impressed. The story is of 2 girls from Karachi in Pakistan who grow up together as best friends. There is a pivotal moment in their friendship after a party when one of them decides to take a car journey and the other has to go along to ensure her safety. This part of the book is really well written and the tension over these pages is excellent. This event carries through their lives when they both end up in London in 2 very different careers. The ending of the book is a little disappointing as I would have liked to see the consequences of their decisions played out more. However it is a very fine read and the friendship between the 2 central characters jumps off the pages. I intend to check out Kamila's previous book Home Fire which got good reviews and was winner of the 2018 women's prize for fiction.
