The story revolves around Alfie, whose wife Pippa has recently had an accident and died, their twin daughters, and Pippa’s twin sister Julia. There is also the mysterious Black Mamba, who we never are one hundred percent certain is real or not.

The story is told through the perspectives of Alfie and Julia, which works really well as shows how grief affects us differently depending upon our relationship with the deceased and other family members. It highlights the difficulties within family relationships and how they affect not only the direct family members but also those who join the family as partners and who inherit all the family issues by default.

The author develops the back story in an interesting and engaging way, slowly building the tension and allowing us to get to know the characters and why they act, and react, in the ways they do. More is said between the lines than what is actually written and, for this reason, the book is worth a second read. I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone but I did find the ending slightly odd, as if it was almost rushed after all the tension that had been built up throughout and I think this section could have been developed better.

Interesting and unique psychological thriller. Would make a great film.
