This was a creepy, thought provoking read! Twins, spirits and demons, the loss of a parent and the stages of grief all lend themselves as themes to this brilliant debut by William Friend.
The tale centers around Alfie, a widower, his twin daughters and their Aunt Julia (who was also a twin). As they all come to grips with the recent tragic death of Pippa, the girls' mum, a mysterious imaginary friend known as Black Mamba makes his presence known in the haunting Hart House. How much of this is imagined, and how much is paranormal is difficult to tell and you're left engrossed and turning the pages til the very end.
Occultism and religion layer in the background, balanced perfectly with psychology and the human condition. This book will stay with me for a while I think! I look forward to seeing what else William Friend produces in future.
