3.5 stars. I was drawn in by the gorgeous cover of this book, but stayed for the spooky and chilling story. There is nothing like an eerie read that is full of family secrets, tension and drama. Although this book does deliver that, it offers so much more. It provides a chilling exploration of grief and how relationships can change following a loss. There are classic horror tropes (such as night visits from ghostly figures and figures lacking faces) and unravelling sanity. It is eerie and very gothic, but unfortunately not as scary as I was expecting. I would say this is more of a literary thriller rather than a horror, but still worth a read, as it was a great thriller. The characters are interesting and it is fascinating to try and discover whether history is repeating itself. I am looking forward to seeing what this author writes next.
