Twins Cassia and Sylvie have made a new friend. For most families this wouldn’t be a cause for concern but these girls never play with anyone else, having only ever needed each other. On top of that this new friend isn’t real.. or is he? According to them ‘Black Mamba’ as he’s called only appears to those who he wants to see him, which unfortunately doesn’t include their father Alfie, who is still reeling from the untimely death of his wife, their mother, Pippa. Alfie is plagued with a sense of unease and is struggling to cope alone; He doesn’t have a support network, except his wife’s estranged family who still live nearby, and who resent him for living in what was their family home. Coupled with that until now his sister-in-law Julia, Pippa’s twin and a child psychologist, has refused to work with the girls thinking she wasn’t the person to help them. But Julia knows that the house has always been a strange place, there have always been shadows lurking, and she fears for them. Can Alfie and Julia put aside their own grief to work together to help the girls? Or is it already too late?

I’m not entirely sure what I just read but I loved it 🙈
From the very first line I was gripped, and I felt completely unsettled throughout. A sense of unease permeates the pages and I couldn’t turn them quick enough, always wondering what would happen next. Black Mamba’s insidious presence is obviously ominous, but you’re never quite sure what or who he is and whether he means them all harm. It’s a bit of a mind boggler, days later I’m still reeling and trying to work out what’s what, but it’s also a definite page-turner that I’d highly recommend to anyone who loves a book with major spooky vibes! It would make a great film, that’s for sure!
