This extract immediately creates such a strong sense of tension and desperation. In the first chapter we really feel for Affi as she’s in a terrible situation. After that there’s the sense of relief as she’s rescued and is safe with a family… until the danger ramps back up again.
I also really liked being introduced to the characters in the police - Max and Janie - and seeing a glimpse of their relationship as a married couple who also work together.
