Blood Runs Cold is the fourth novel in Neil Lancaster's DS Max Craigie series. Admittedly, I haven't read the previous books in this series but this did not seem to matter or spoil my enjoyment as the story works fine as a standalone.
Trafficking victim Affi Smith goes for a run on her fifteenth birthday and doesn't come home. She was supposed to be safe in her new home in the Scottish highlands but she has been taken against her will. DS Max Craigie joins the investigation to find out what has happened to her and in the process, discovers other trafficking victims that have also disappeared. It appears there has been a leak somewhere within law enforcement
This is a very fast paced novel as the team race against the clock to find Affi and expose the mole. Whilst this was a very serious storyline, there were lots of light hearted moments inbetween - I enjoyed the banter between the colleagues and I really liked the character of Max Craigie so I'd be interested in reading more of this series!
