The book opens with a prologue introducing us to the character of Afrodita Dushku whom the story is built upon, giving a bit of her backstory - we learn that she is a victim of human trafficking and what the circumstances she now finds herself in are. We then fast forward three years to Affi's sudden disappearance...

DS Max Craigie, who works as part of a small 'Policing Standards Reassurance' team becomes involved in the missing person's case due to his wife's connection to Affi. Using all the tech and tactics at their disposal, the team investigate Aff's disappearance and the circumstances leading up to it.

It is difficult to write much more without including spoilers, so I'll say no more on the story. However, whilst the blurb refers to human trafficking, I would say that the book is more about the corruption which enables the traffickers rather that the victims themselves.

This is the fourth DS Max Craigie book, but it is perfectly readable as a standalone book - I haven't read the first three and I didn't feel like I needed any further background on the main characters to understand what was going on. The majority of the chapters are relatively short which makes for a quick page-turning read.
