Blood Runs Cold is yet another police procedural about the Albanian mafia trafficking young girls into the UK to work in brothels. The book starts with the vivid and breathtaking fear of twelve year old Affi who is being used to transport drugs to Scotland.
There is, of course, the usual elements of police corruption and other miscreants in high places so the investigation is being handled by the 4 officers of the Policing Standards Reassurance team who are featured in Neil Lancaster’s previous books.
I love the characters and banter between Max, Janie and Ross. This is enhanced by a tech wizard from Yorkshire, Barney in this book.
The storyline dragged a bit in the middle when the never ending description of phone technology seemed to overwhelm the narrative for me.
I am a big fan of Scottish crime novels, particularly those of James Oswald and Val McDermid. Although the storyline was not ‘novel’, I loved the characters and their interaction and would add Neil Lancaster to my list of ‘must read’ authors.
