This was a high activity, high energy page turner. I confess I was considering giving up, as I was so uncomfortable with what was going on in the first quarter-third of the book, but I'm glad I didn't, and I was very satisfied with the way things turned out! Hard to say more without giving away spoilers.

I love Max, Janie, Ross, Barney and Norma, the core team at the heart of the secret, under-the-radar, anti-corruption team operating in Police Scotland. I know these books are works of fiction, but the suggestion that there are elements of truth here is terrifying.

At the heart of the story is a 15 year old Albanian girl who was trafficked into the UK a few years ago, and has now settled with a foster family in Scotland, Affi. The action really all kicks off when Affi goes missing from her favourite running route.

I really enjoy books where the bad guys get their comeuppance, and this did not disappoint me. I love the humour and banter among the team, I love the integrity, and genuine desire to do good, and root out the rotten individuals. Perhaps hard to say it's a feel-good book, given the themes of trafficking, prostitution, violence and corruption, but it does feel like the scales are more in favour of the good guys by the end.

Highly recommended BUT please go read the first three in the series first! Dead Man's Grave, The Blood Tide, and The Night Watch - you won't be disappointed.
