Blood Runs Cold is the fourth book in the Detective Sergeant Max Craigie series, although you don't necessarily need to have heard/be familiar with the previous three editions as this novel makes for a good standalone tale.

We dive straight into the story of Affi Smith - a talented athlete abducted during a run on her 15th birthday, three years after being rescued as a trafficking victim when she enters the UK, despite being given a new home and identity in the Scottish Highlands - and the themes that arise from it such as human trafficking and fostering.

Overall, there's a healthy balance between police procedure and action, as the team of detectives have to deal police corruption (Line of Duty style) and Albanian gangsters whilst simultaneously attempting to solve the mystery of Affi's disappearance, while the dialogue/banter (for want of a better word) between Max and his colleagues also stood out for its realism and authenticity.
