Afrodita Dushku, a former victim of trafficking, is the subject of the case. When she was twelve years old, she managed to flee a dangerous Albanian group. She received a new name—Affi Smith—as well as a safe house in the Scottish Highlands. She was supposed to be secure now that she was fifteen years old, but one day she went for a run and never came back.

When she learns of the girl's disappearance, Katie, the wife of DS Max Craigie, who is supporting Affi with her application for permanent residence, is understandably concerned. She requests Craigie to look into it. He rapidly learns that other young people who had been trafficked had vanished under similar circumstances. There seems to be a leak within the law enforcement community.

Before things get worse, Max and his team are under pressure to find Affi's kidnappers and identify the mole. We won't go into more depth to prevent spoilers.

Neil Lancaster worked as a detective with the Metropolitan Police for more than 25 years, conducting major criminal investigations. He uses this vast experience in his police procedurals as a result. Although they are clearly grim tales, the humour between Craigie and his team mates helps to soften them.
