This is the fourth book in the DS Cragie series and although I haven't read the first three I enjoyed this and it works as a standalone, I'm sure there's more background plots that follow through the books but I didn't feel like I was missing out having not read the others.

Affi is the victim of an albanian drug trafficking gang, she is rescued and given a new identity. She lives a very happy life with her foster parents, finding solice in athletics, until at age 15 she is abducted whilst on a run and figures of her past catch up with her.

DS Max Cragie investigates her disappearance after the local police exhaust all leads and eventually conclude she has simply run away as she had a history of this in the beginning. Max's wife Katie pushes him to investigate she has been working closely with Affi, recently she has been much happier and settled and has put all her energy into athletics, Katie thinks that running away now would be very out of character for Affi at present.

Along the way there are lots of revelations and unexpected individuals mixed up in this ever evolving case, from the gangster known as 'The Surgeon', the Albanian Madam, ex-boyfriends, corrupt cops and government officials.

I enjoyed the writing, the scottish dialect added a vibrancy to the book and the police procedure felt really authentic. Thrillers aren't my favourite genre but this was an enjoyable read for me. This gritty story was full of excitement and lots of twists and turns.
