This was brilliant - I'm a sucker for a great crime/police thriller and this book is definitely that!
Thrown into the murky world of organised crime and people trafficking, the story didn't let up from the start. I was on edge nearly the whole time and found myself putting off doing other things so that I could keep reading.
Max Craigie is a refreshing cop at the heart of a series - not massively depressed or addicted to anything or divorced or (that much of) a renegade. It's clear there is some darkness in his past, but he's just totally focused on rooting out bent coppers and helping people, which he does with the help of his partner and team, and even his wife on this occasion.
The heart and hope in the story comes in the form of the saintly Valerie and Reg, the foster carers who took Affi in after she escaped her traffickers. The strength of that familial (and it is totally familial) bond between the three of them is shown very clearly in the book.
This is the fourth in the series...you better believe that books 1-3 are now on my list!
