This book has a tense start that continues throughout. The subject matter is hard to read at times and at one point I thought I wouldn't be able to finish, but I pushed on and I'm glad I did as it turned out to be handled very well and the story wasn't about being shocking or horrifying, it was about a really well written police investigation.
I loved the characters of Barney and Ross and the banter between the team was really believable. I did think it was a bit too much at times between the two main characters of Janie and Max, especially when they were initially looking at the room of the kidnapped teenager Affi. The banter here made their concern for her welfare feel a bit disingenuous.
The plot is more complex than a who dunnit crime novel, I was three quarters of the way through and still hadn't worked it out, and even when I thought I had it, I hadn't. The short story at the end was a nice extra and I thought it was an interesting choice to include one about Janie when she had felt more like a supporting character to Max. It was nice that time was given to her backstory and flesh out the character more to put them on equal footing. All in all a great read that felt like it was written by someone with a real knowledgeable understanding of police investigation.
