Having passed the Kings Sedgemoor Drain many times on the M5 I had never considered the history of this spot. And despite my dislike of the introduction of yet another history fest, I really engaged with this book. Well written with intrigue a plenty.

This book has encapsulated the air of a the time of James II nicely. The first 33 pages builds two characters well whilst enveloping the reader in this time period. So who are these characters?

First is a French spy with nefarious plans afoot. Although he shows an interesting dualistic character, having compassion for fellow humans as well as a capacity for cold murder, what a guy. Definitely the more interesting chap to begin.

Second an English soldier and former spy with a keen interest in the mathematics of gunnery. Once a spy always a spy though, I recon he will return to plumbing those dark undercover depths as the pages unfurl.

Worth a read.
