On first reading it, I wondered if I had missed the second novel in the series, as there was a very large, unexplaind satisfactorily explained gap between the two. I am sure Mr Donald could have expanded the book with a few chapters on Holcroft's sojourn to France, and the detah of his father.
Exciting enough at times, with the intrigue and attempts on Holcrofts life, the end itself was slightly disappointing, being like a 'Friday afternoon job', with a rush to be finished.
Anguis Donald is a very fine writer, hence the 4 stars, but I would hope for quite an improvement in the next chapter of the adventures of Mr Blood.
It hasn't intrigued me enough to carry on reading if indeed there is a 3rd in the series.
