I loved this book. As a fan of historical novels I found the character of Lt Holcroft Blood to be really likeable. He is fighting battles for King James II and yet finds that he has enemies of his own. A frenchman has followed him from the continent and wants him dead. King James is catholic and the people want to install protestant William onto the throne. It' surprising in the era the book is set that you could trust any one. Who is on your side ? As people turn tale and switch sides you are best to keep your mouth shut and tread carefully.
I love how the author has encapsulated the age and brought it back to life in the pages. You almost feel at times that you are sat in the room or at the side of the battlefield with the people and joining in history......fantastic
