The story of the revolution in England of 1688 is little told in historical fiction, but it’s well covered in this great book. It combines treachery, treason and politics in full colour, with a strong characters well described. Our hero Lieutenant Holcroft Blood has returned from his years of secrecy in France to return to normal army life. He was hoping for a quieter and more ordered life, but the jealousies and suspicions surrounding the political upheavals ending in the flight of the King James the Second an the arrival of William and Mary and their ascension to the throne, make that impossible. The actual history is well covered and is accompanied with a thrilling and great adventure story as Lt. Blood fights off a French agent after revenge.. He also has to deal with the revolution occurring all around him as his friends take away their support of the monarch, the man who‘s reign he is sworn to support. His political and personal dilemmas are interspersed with military and personal battles. A book well worth reading on it’s own, but it would be even better to read the previous book “Blood’s Game” first and hopefully we’ll have further adventures of Holcroft Blood in the future.
