Bob vs the Selfie Zombie by Andy Jones is a middle grade, fast paced adventure story with a time travel element. We follow Bob, who can travel into the future and what he finds there is shocking. There are Selfe Zombies - people who have a selfie hat that became obsessed and zombie-like when they used them. Bob is tasked by Future (older) Bob to try and stop Eno, his school nemesis, to not win the talent show as he invented the selfie hats that started it all. Bob goes on a whirlwind, time travelling adventure, hopping forward and backward in time, trying to make the changes so selfie zombies do not happen. It was quite a fast paced read, and I think that this book would be perfect for reluctant readers. There were some very exciting illustrations to go along with the book and I think that they really enhanced the story. The doodles in the middle of text made the book read ‘faster’, so this would really be a good read for reluctant readers. I think the science fiction element would really attract teenage boys, especially with the humour. It does have an air of Wimpy Kid humour about it. The plot is not complicated, but I think this is a benefit to the story. I think it was a very fast paced book and I really enjoyed reading it aloud at points for the humour punchlines. It definitely meets its target audience. I would recommend this for all school libraries to have as I think it would be a quite exciting read for aged 8-13 readers.
