Life’s A Beach is the follow up to the enjoyable Bookshop Girl, by Foyle’s bookseller Chloe Coles. Who better to write a book for bibliophiles? The aptly named Paige Turner’s second adventure finds her and BFF Holly at the famous Skegton-on-Sea Literary Festival. They can’t believe their luck at being paid to do what they love doing: selling books and meeting people buying books, while at the same time getting to meet famous authors and hopefully their hero, musician turned artist Johnny Hoxton. But as we might expect, knowing Paige’s predilection for unwittingly causing chaos wherever she goes, things do not turn out as she planned. Paige does get to meet a world famous author, and learns a lot from her, but it’s not how she expected. The second in the Bookshop Girl series does not disappoint. The love for books and all things bookish is still there; there are some very funny moments – when Robbie turns to the back page and folds the book over breaking the spine I winced and laughed out loud at the same time; Paige and Holly’s relationship is heart-warming; and the budding romance between Paige and Robbie is convincing. Having been to many literary festivals over the years I recognised the gut wrenching feeling when you discover that someone you have long admired turns out to be somewhat of a disappointment, and conversely the joy of finding someone new to read and admire. Although I am not the target audience, I enjoyed this book very much, even the ‘teenspeak’. At a time when there is such an emphasis on technology and everyone appears to be glued to their various devices, it is refreshing to celebrate ‘real’ books. Hopefully Paige and Holly’s festival fun will encourage other young readers to support local literary festivals. They’re usually much better organised than the one at Skegton-on-Sea!
