This book is billed as a memoir about Bruce Fogle’s life as a young vet in 1970s London, which it is; but it is also a story about how he met and married the love of his life - actress Julia Foster. It is warmly written and very informative about differing veterinary practices between then and the present day (there are often explanations within the text or in a footnote). We get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how Harrods stocked and sold various animals back in the Seventies, along with insights into how some of the most affluent people in London came to visit the veterinary surgery where Bruce was lucky enough to work. He really landed on his feet when he got a job with Brian Singleton.
I enjoyed reading this, and would be interested in reading more about where Bruce’s career has taken him, in particular the setting up and evolution of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
