I initially felt like this book wasn't totally for me. I didn't like the front cover and I wasn't impressed with the initial extract. However having read the entire book I feel like I have judged a book by it's cover. I really enjoyed the book and I found the different stories that Bruce told about life as a vet in the 1970's quite fascinating. Bruce himself was endearing, he had an interesting personal life and the writing flowed well. I found it funny how he couldn't get used to English vulgarity.

Veterinary practice and even animal welfare is very different now and it was interesting to read about what they were but also how Bruce felt about the practices that are now illegal. Bruce admits that he didn't consider the welfare of the animals when he did experimental surgical exercises. He also speaks of tail docking which was considered a normal practice back then. I felt Bruce's pain and heartbreak when he described the Harrods puma dying and he compared Harrods to Club Row. I also found it interesting when Bruce compared how far behind we are in compared to the Swedish Kennel Club with regards to animal welfare.

This was a truly fascinating well written memoir and contains entertaining and sometimes heartbreaking tales of clients and pets. It was such an easy read and I would recommend this book to all.
