In Call The Vet Bruce Fogle writes a very entertaining account of his life as a newly qualified vet from Canada working in London in the early 1970s. Not only does the author entertain his readers with stories of his working life and the animals and owners he meets but also relates his social life, the fashions of the time and adapting to life in a different country. He states that in spite of having a common language many words don't necessarily mean the same in London as they did in Canada leading to some confusion as he begins to understand British people in general and Londoners in particular. He recounts many stories about the people and animals he meets in the vet's practice he's working at for Brian Singleton including treating the animals in Harrods pet department. Initially he intended staying in Britain for the duration of his two year contact with Brian Singleton but this part of his life story relates the reasons that led to him staying in Britain. This is a great book, very entertaining for anyone looking to curl up with a good book, whether or not they have a cat on their lap or a dog at their feet.
