In Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte is a somewhat flat character, not changing much if at all throughout the novel. In this book, Helen Moffett seems to flip that notion on its head. From the beginning pages, we see Charlotte as a complex character, full of grief and loss at the death of her son. Our opinion of Mr. Collins also changes within the first few pages, as we witness a compassionate and loving husband rather than the baseless fool that Elizabeth Bennett disapproved of. In the early pages of this novel, we see the makings of a feminist theme, as Charlotte realizes she will have to fight for her daughters' inheritance. I'm intrigued and hooked from the first 30 pages, and it will be interesting to see where Moffett takes these characters and their stories next.
