Charlotte is a work of historical fiction which is supposed to be a continuation of Pride and Prejudice. It follows the story of Charlotte Lucas who married Mr Collins and carried on her life with him.
The opening to this book was excellent, the first chapter or so hooked me. Charlotte experiences such loss that I found myself empathising with her and feeling emotional. The author uses such beautiful language and has such a descriptive style of writing that often I felt like I was in the room with the characters and could smell the same smells and see the same things.
I felt that the author had several ideas however for which direction she wanted to take this story but rather than choose just one and complete that with conviction, she chose a couple and as such I never really felt that the story got going and when it did, it ended as soon as it started. I enjoyed following Charlotte and meeting up with familiar characters again but I don't feel that this story was anything new or memorable. It's a 'nice' book to read but didn't impress me.
