Charlotte purports to give readers an insight into the life of Charlotte Lucas, now Charlotte Collins, after Pride and Prejudice finished. It also provides a back story as to how Charlotte managed to become Mrs Collins.
This Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice spin-off is alright. Whilst it is not my genre of choice, it is easy enough to read; although it does at times feel like the author has used numerous paragraphs when one or two would suffice. Also, the tone doesn't sit well with Austen's characters and there is a grubbiness to some of the storylines; when a new character was introduced, you knew exactly what they were put there for...
I also think that, for a first novel, there is an element of trading on Jane Austen’s name as a means to gain a wider readership - I’m not ordinarily a fan of other authors attempting to trade on a classic.
If this were a standalone book, with nothing whatsoever to do with Pride and Prejudice; then I think it would be a passable, if longwinded story. That said, you don't really have to have read Pride and Prejudice to read this book, indeed it is probably better that you haven't, then you won't be disappointed.
