I'm always wary of authors taking on Jane Austen, particularly Pride and Prejudice as it has been done so many times before. In this case though we have an intriguing and fresh idea that I can't believe hasn't been explored before now - just what happens to Charlotte Lucas after she marries Mr Collins? I'll admit that the story didn't take the path I was expecting - I'm not sure what I was expecting - but it was an enjoyable ride, and an interesting take on Mr Collins, one of Austen's most iconic creations. Some of Charlotte's actions I found questionable and a little out of character, but then I remember that we never actually find out that much about her in the original P&P, and she must have had some courage to do what she did. Austen superfans should perhaps steer clear, otherwise this is an engaging and interesting read.
