I enjoyed the idea of this book - taking a smaller character from Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' and exploring her story. It has been a long time since I read 'Pride and Prejudice', but you didn't need to know too much of that plot to still know what was going on in this book.

I don't think it is surprising that Charlotte didn't have a wild love for her husband, and understanding her reasons for still marrying him within the context of the time was well explored. I was more surprised by her affair and acting on these emotions here. I liked reading about her cottage life and how she made her house into a home.

There were times where the writing style was trying to emulate Austen's, but also times where I felt it was more modern - such as the details of the affair. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable story and I am pleased I have read it.
