An enjoyable novel about the life of Charlotte Lucas after she marries Mr. Collins. In contrast to her friend Elizabeth Bennet she marries not for love but duty and financial security. It deals with the themes of loss, inheritance and the precarious position of women without independent financial means.
It has many nods to characters such as Mr & Mrs Darcy, Lady Catherine de Bourgh and plots from Pride and Prejudice which I loved and were done very sensitively to the classic.
Charlotte is a very sympathetic character who suffers the loss of her much loved son which is heartbreaking. apart from the tragedy of her childs death this also means that her and her daughters are no longer financially secure as only males can inherit. She spends a summer at Pemberley with her daughters and in working through her grief she opens her heart again.
