Nuanced
First and foremost, my first impression was definitely positive. The title is simple yet evocative, and the cover artwork is striking - bold and delicate at the same time... which, come to think of it, describes with some precision the heroine of this novel.
I did read Pride and Prejudice when I was younger and I was intrigued by the premise of this book as soon as I read the synopsis.
After a brilliant (and definitely feminist-minded) beginning, I wasn't sure where the novel was headed as I thought it had meandered too much into the past and wasn't looking enough towards the future. However, everything made sense by the end of it and I wasn't disappointed.
Both the characters and the places of the narration were brought to life and I felt I was there, right in the middle of the events that were unfolding. Beautifully written, it has left me wanting for more.
