For readers with an interest in the work of Jane Austen, specifically Pride and Prejudice, they will be delighted to read Charlotte, which is author Helen Moffet's take on a slightly minor character from Austin's novel: Charlotte Lucas. There is no need to be familiar with Austen's original writing since it dedicates most of its space to Lizzy Bennett and her relationship with Mr Darcy, but fans of historical fiction in general should find something of interest in Moffet's retelling of the characters. Like Lizzy, Charlotte is a strong female character, whose relationships with men and her children have both tragic and poignant points but overall present her as a rounded, human character with flaws. Some moments seem out of character for Charlotte, but overall it was a great book with an interesting story and some consistency with Austen.
