This would not be a typical genre for me but I thought I would try it anyway. I will confess also that I have never read pride and prejudice so I couldn’t make the connection between the original novel and this one. Charlotte is an interesting character who for everything appears very normal and understanding of her obligations as a wife and mother. It is clear that early on she is quite cunning and the fact that she knowing her friend has turned down William Collins decides that this will be a good match for her to accept even if she doesn’t love him due to his status in society. Her son dying is tragic and prominent throughout. I liked the Herr Rosenstein twist interesting to say the least and strangely sad due to the way things end with this liaison. Ann de bourge was an odd character and interestingly placed overall a slow read for me but that may just be because it was different to what I am used to.
