I can't understand the negative first impressions of this book. If you don't like the sound of it, just move on!
I was lucky enough to win a copy of the second book in the series, Shadowblack, and bought and flew through the first to be able to read it as soon as it arrived.
De Castell has a beautiful way of weaving words to create a whole world that is so similar but yet so different to ours.
I like the fact that each book continues the story of Kellen while also being stand alone, so even if you haven't read the other books I don't feel it would take away the enjoyment of this one.
As with Spellslinger and Shadowblack this book has a beautiful cover - the kind that would intrigue me if I saw someone else reading it. I can't wait to find out what happens to our three anti-heroes!
