My instant thoughts as reading the first page or so was how much it reminded me of Terry Pratchett stories. There is the same level of immersion in a completely different world, with different rules, different animals, somewhere where magic, hexes, dry-lightning are a standard part of life. You can also tell that this is part of a series, and these characters are ones that we should be familiar with as is the world in which they live.
