I had my reservations about continuing with this series as I found Spellslinger and Shadowblack to be slow and unexciting. However, the story just keeps getting better and I enjoyed this much more than the previous two. Charmcaster follows Kellen, an outlaw, traitor, and a guy with a few magic tricks at his fingertips try to save the world with his "business partner", a large, very violent squirrel cat. Lots of magic and duels, spies and assassins ensue.

I liked how Nephenia made a return, this time more badass and more sure of herself. Ferious and her smooth yet confusing talk made me laugh whilst making me think what is she actually on about. Kellen is just Kellen with a bit of self-pity and a lot of anger. But Reichis is definitely my favourite character out of them all.
