Great fun. The characterisation of the animal familiars is especially charming. The hero’s weaknesses and flaws are his strength. His mentor and his friends all chime well. An amusing and heartwarming romp.

Kellen is growing in maturity and his skills are improving too. The coin thingy is good too - literal spellslinging - all challenging his clan’s magic. I’m not sure if it wouldn’t be better however if, just occasionally there could also be a male good guy, rather than every other human friend being a female! Kelley can’t be the only decent man on the planet, surely?

That said, I will definitely finish this book, and would recommend it to other fantasy readers. I for one don’t mind that the body count is low.
