A classic story of spies, packed full of intrigue, heartbreak and British stubbornness. Set in the midst of the Second World War, City Of Spies is a highly atmospheric read. Timon’s novel is packed with action yet little happens as the story unfolds, leaving us knowing as much as our heroine does, and having to rely on her instincts.

The tag ‘no one is who they claim to be’ could not be more true. Timon’s clever writing fooled me into liking characters I should have known better than to like. Somehow she managed to make characters I would normally be weary off, overly charming and I found myself drawn to them just like Elisabeth was. Perhaps the only character this doesn’t apply to is Elisabeth herself, who remained highly likable, albeit it sometimes reckless, throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed following her journey and found myself routing for her on more than one occasion.

For a debut novel, Mara Timon has made quite an impression and I look forward to reading her next release. If it is equally as atmospheric, well written and enjoyable as City Of Spies, we are all in for a treat!
