This book had me hooked when I read the first look before I received it, I was intrigued instantly and dying to know more about the characters and the potential of Elisabeth De Mornay's life.
However, the book didn't quite live up to what I was expecting. Overall, I did enjoy the book and would definitely recommend it as it was worth a read, but I didn't feel like I was hooked until the last 100 pages or so.
There was so many characters to keep up with from so many countries who speak multiple languages and are from various nationalities so I found that quite hard to keep up with (I should have remembered there was a character list at the front which may be more helpful for someone going forward)!
Towards the end I loved the plot twists and the layer of romance that was added. I have to say the book has been told from a rather unique standpoint of a female spy operating in the 'neutral' country that Portugal was throughout the war (which I did not know much about before reading). I loved the various pursuits of Elisabeth I just wish the romance section had been started sooner and a few of the twists towards the end explained slightly more.
One thing is for sure.. I will be going to Lisbon at some point in the future it sounds wonderful.
Also, absolutely loved the Historical Notes at the end and the walk through of Lisbon's attractions - brilliant touch.
