I love reading debut novels because there's always a feeling of mystery. You don't really know what you're going to get - but it's always two extremes. Either you'll dislike it, and never read from the author again, or you will enjoy it and find yourself something to be excited about whenever the author drops another book.

The premise of City of Spies is gripping. In 1943, after escaping Nazi - occupied France, Elizabeth, and SOE agent, must infiltrate high society in neutral Lisbon and find out who is leaking information about the Germans. The plot of the book overall is an interesting mix of history and fiction. As you journey in Elizabeth's shoes, you learn more about the war at the time, an appreciation of how complex history can be. Elizabeth's close encounters with her foes as well as her impossible tasks are bound to keep any reader interested.

I suppose the only part of this book I didn't enjoy as much is that, at times, it felt a little 'cliche' and overdone. Elizabeth is your typical 'strong' female character in that she is powerful and ruthless, except when it comes to men - which I find hard to imagine, considering all the stunts she's managing to pull off.

A decent book for mystery lovers, though it could use a little more depth.
