My kind of book, about brave women (and men) during wartime. Elisabeth, aka Nathalie, aka Veronica, aka Solange, is an SOE agent who is working in Paris. But her cover is blown and she has to rush away, heading to neutral Spain, in just the clothes she's wearing. Once over the border she is sent to Portugal, posing as a French widow she is tasked with making friends with the many Germans living in Lisbon. Portugal is also supposedly neutral, but it's rife with people spying and selling information. No-one is who they're pretending to be, and she can trust absolutely nobody, other than her godfather who is running the network there.
Taken under the wing of Claudine, whose husband is playing a doubly dangerous game playing both sides against each other, she is soon partying with the German elite. With her spy training she notices things that the average civilian would not, and helps to bring down a smuggling ring. But this brings her to the attention of the PVDE, the anything but neutral police.
There are fist fights, knife fights, gun fights, all with 'Solange' taking part, not relegated to the sidelines as often happens. There's also a love interest. And, even better.... there will be a sequel!!
