City of Spies is the debut novel by Mara Timon and it is an enjoyable and easy read.
The book starts in France in 1943 when the SOE agent Elisabeth de Mornay is forced to flee when she is uncovered by the Gestapo. Ending up in Lisbon her adventures continue as she tries to obtain details of the German’s actions against Allied shipping.
As with all traditional spy stories nobody is whom they seem to be and this keeps the pages of the book turning at a regular pace.
My main reservation is that for a supposedly top SOE agent de Mornay makes some basic and very simple mistakes which detracted slightly from the overall enjoyment. That said this is the first book in a new series and I will keep an eye out for future instalments
