Oh, I really loved this.

WW2 historical fiction is one of my favourite genres. I especially love it when real events are mixed in (i.e. not just generalised stories set in WW2 Europe). This one left an impact on me because of how well it helped visualise just how messy the whole situation was. I remember reading excerpts of journals from soldiers about how before the war people across borders were friends and then the next day they had to hate each other for what the lowly man felt was no real good reason. This really illustrated how fighting for your country was messy and how being part of the Resistance was even more tangled.

I never knew about Portugal's relevance to the war and Lisbon being the City of Spies. This was a brilliant way to learn about that history somewhat. The characters are fabulously drawn out and I loved learning about them. It was like a puzzle for me just as much as it was for Elisabeth to figure out who was on what side and how much of their words were coded truths or well placed lies.

This book had my heart racing and I couldn't possibly set it down without getting to the very end. I want more! I want to know what happens next in Elisabeth's story! I absolutely loved this story.
