“The strapline of Foyle’s war meets the Bletchley Circle was slightly offputting. The book catapults us straight into Occupied Paris standard scenario #4 - Waiting in the bistro for a Resistance contact who may have been betrayed/is a betrayer. Clearly going to be a Boys Own adventure , but with a Daisy Pulls it Off type feisty ( idiotically impetuous) heroine. Not a lot of subtlety to start with but the book promises lots of twists and turns as ‘Daisy’ makes short work of a couple of Nazis and heads off for her encounter with the dashing airman who may or not be the love interest. Quelle Surprise! But just because it’s formulaic doesn’t mean to say that it’s not a rattling good yarn.”
That was my first look comment and I did remark that I would be more likely to borrow the book than to buy it as I thought it would become tedious. It did, I think the situation in Lisbon during the war was complicated and possibly far fetched and it’s a feature the book replicates. I honestly couldn’t care by the end who was betraying whom and who was the good guy and who wasn’t. The ending clearly sets us up for a sequel but it won’t be one that I’m rushing to buy
