City of Spies is a thumping good story. Elizabeth, our SOE agent radio operator working with the Resistance in France, has to flee Paris when she is almost caught by the Gestapo. In early summer 1943 she travels to Portugal, a neutral country, (using some of her training to stay alive). In Lisbon with her new orders, she becomes Solange, a wealthy French widow, needing to infiltrate European high society who are waiting out the war. One or more, of the people she meets is a traitor and she has to risk her life many times, whilst reluctantly developing strong feelings for a German officer.
With so many secrets, lies, and false names, I found I sometimes had to resort to the character list at the beginning of the book to check who was who. Our heroine is a strong, brave,clever, determined woman who this reader greatly admired.
