I did not expect to like this book so much.

I am not normally a fan of books written in verse. I didn’t realise this one was written in verse until I started reading it, and if I had I probably wouldn’t have picked it up, but I’m so glad I persisted. The verse was so well written I barely noticed the fact it wasn’t a full novel as it was so descriptive and events were illustrated so well.

This book follows Camino Ruos, who lives in the Dominican Republic, and Yahaira Rios, who lives in New York. They both get a huge shock as they find out their father died in a plane crash from New York to the Dominican Republic, and this book deals with their feelings of grief and how to go on after losing someone you love. It’s a heartbreaking, beautiful tale that perfectly sums up what it’s like to lose someone so unexpectedly, and the dual narrative allows for explorations of both girls feelings. Although they are each struggling alone, throughout the course of the book their stories intertwine and they learn of each other’s existence, discovering after years parted by their father’s double life that they are in fact sisters.

I really enjoyed the plot and the characters, and there is of course great diversity in this book. The themes of grief, family and sisterhood are dealt with wonderfully. If you want a book to tug at your heartstrings, this is definitely the one for you.
