I loved Acevedo's The Poet X and have always been a sucker for verse novels, so I threw myself into Clap When You Land with high hopes, and safe to say, my hopes were met! A gorgeous story of sisters (Yahaira and Carmino) finding each other spanning two countries across the world, Clap When You Land explores the two sisters' cultures and how where they live has affected their lives, and how tragedy can bring people together and sometimes open new doors.

The sinister reality of being a woman, and the normalisation of how they are often inappropriately treated, is portrayed expertly when we meet El Cero and as his advances escalate, the dread sets in. Writing in verse allows Acevedo to create tension in a way that cannot be replicated through prose, and the effect is noticable. Fortunately for Yahaira, her newly discovered sister is able to come to the rescue and the book draws to a close with a very sweet scene in which they hold hands on a plane back to the US.

I greatly enjoyed this book and would absolutely recommend to anyone searching for a good read - especially if they have yet to experience a verse novel!
